Despised and Rejected, Suffering Jesus, The Savior (Maundy Thursday)

What Jesus said about his pending death
Remark
Scripture
From
He told his followers, “No one takes my life from me, but I willingly lay it down.
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.
John 10:18
He said that he could have called on angelic troops to rescue him, but he chose not to.
Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
Matt 26:53
He silently soaked up blows and abuse from people, priests and soldiers.
They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
Matt 27:30
And when the Roman governor Pilate asked him to defend himself, Jesus remained silent – in spite of knowing that only Pilate could grant his freedom.
When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
Matt 27:12-14
Jesus was in such control of his death that the Gospel writers even go so far as to tell us that, at the time of his death - “He gave up his spirit.”
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
Matt 27:50

Remark
Scripture
From
1
He would be born in a town called Bethlehem
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.
Micah 5:2
2
Of a virgin
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
3
He would be betrayed by a friend
Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.
Psalm 41:9
4
And sold for thirty pieces of silver
I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.
Zechariah 11:12
5
He would be struck and spit on
I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.
Isaiah 50:6
6
While his hands and feet would be pierced
Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.
Psalm 22:16
7
And so would his side
And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.
Zechariah 12:10
8
The soldiers would throw dice for his clothes
They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.
Psalm 22:18
9
While never breaking a bone of his body
he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.
Psalm 34:20
10
He would be buried in a rich man’s grave
He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Isaiah 53:9
11
And would rise again from the dead
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
Psalm 16:10
12
In that day, declares the Lord God, I will make the sun go down at noon and make the earth dark in broad daylight.
“In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.
Amos 8:9

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
(Isa 53:5)

Gethsemane

“To see the King of heaven fall
In anguish to His knees,
The Light and Hope of all the world
Now overwhelmed with grief.
What nameless horrors must He see,
To cry out in the garden:
Oh, take this cup away from me
Yet not my will but Yours,
Yet not my will but Yours.

To know each friend will fall away,
And heaven’s voice be still,
For hell to have its vengeful 复仇的 day
Upon Golgotha’s hill.
No words describe the Saviour’s plight 困境 -
To be by God forsaken
Till wrath and love are satisfied
And every sin is paid
And every sin is paid

What took Him to this wretched 可怜 place,
What kept Him on this road?
His love for Adam’s cursed race,
For every broken soul.
No sin too slight to overlook,
No crime too great to carry,
All mingled 混合 in this poisoned cup ‚
And yet He drank it all,
The Saviour drank it all,
The Saviour drank it all.”
