A Strong & Loving Marriage
Scripture Passage: Colossians 3:18-19
18 Wives,
submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
19 Husbands,
love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Wives
- The command is for wives to submit by affirming and encouraging their husband’s leadership. Submission is voluntary. Submission is a deliberate choice made by a wife to affirm and encourage her husband to lead, love and protect her in all things.
- Biblical submission is the response that God require from a woman to encourage and enable her spouse to fulfill his God-ordained function in marriage.
- Quote: John Piper defines submission as “the divine calling of a wife to honor and affirm her husband’s leadership and help carry it through according to her gifts.”
- Wives submit to your husband lovingly, willingly, joyfully and respectfully because that will reflect your own relationship and submission to the Lord. Your submission is a beautiful representation of the union between Christ and the church.
Husbands
-
A sensitive love – You’re aware and careful about the attitudes, feelings and circumstances of others and act accordingly.
-
A servant love – You’re ever ready to serve and help others before your own.
-
A sacrificial love – You’re willing to give away something no matter how much it will cost you for the sake of that someone.
-
A singular love (being only one) – Apart from God being your first love nothing come in between your love for your wife, not even your parents or children
-
A sharing love – You treat your wife as equal, your partner, your helper, your mate. You’re more than willing to confide in her your deepest secrets, plans, thoughts, struggles and joy.
-
Love with Action – You’ll notice that, in this description of love, God uses words that are ACTIONS, not feelings.
